What is a terpene?

"Terpenes (from the German Terpen from "das Terpentin", turpentine) are a class of hydrocarbons, produced by many plants, especially conifers. They are major components of resin and turpentine produced from resin (...) They have odoriferous properties in plants. A common example is the geranium." (Source: Wikipedia)

They also seem promising in quite a few pharmaceutical applications.

Humulene:

"Humulene, also known as α-humulene or α-caryophyllene (...) was first isolated from hops, Humulus lupulus, hence its name. It is an isomer of caryophyllene, and the two compounds are often mixed in many aromatic plants. Humulene is widely distributed in plants, for example sage, ginseng and Syzygium zeylanicum (Myrtaceae).

Humulene has anti-inflammatory properties in mammals and may have applications against inflammation. It produces an effect similar to that of dexamethasone and reduces edema following histamine injection. It also has an inhibitory effect on the production of tumor necrosis factor(TNFα) and interleukin-1 β in mice injected with carrageenan. Humulene has anticancer properties. It induces apoptosis in colorectal cancer. Humulene derivatives fromAsteriscus vogelii have been shown to be active against lymphoma, lung carcinoma, colon carcinoma and melanoma cells.

Traditionally, humulene-containing plants have been used for the treatment of insomnia, depression, nervousness, delirium, anxiety and digestive disorders." (Source: Wikipedia)
