It is generally grown as an ornamental plant. It contains menthol and is a very good insect repellent.

During the Middle Ages, catnip was used to help against nervousness, colds, flus, and fevers. It was later used to aid digestion.

Its essential oil is also rich in carvacrol and lactone.
